Louis Stagg letters, 1856-1863.

Letters written in French from Louis Stagg to Laure Latour. The letters are written from Ville Platte and Opelousas, La., before the Civil War, and from Camp Moore, La., Tupelo and Jackson, Miss., and Chattanooga, Tenn., during the war. In the antebellum love letters, Stagg relates his feelings for and desire to marry Laure. War letters include descriptions of camp life, wages, drilling, lack of adequate rations, and lack of communication. Stagg mentions rampant illness among the ranks, comments on friends suffering from venereal disease, and notes that soldiers are afraid to visit a doctor from Ohio for fear of dying from his treatment. Additionally, he offers advice to Laure's father regarding crop harvest, refers to a federal raid on his home and charges against a local man for killing a federal officer, and expresses suspicions that his neighbors are traitors, and his plan to resign and transfer to a unit stationed closer to home. Includes currency from Republic of Texas and Confederate States of America.
